ACCORDING TO STRABO (XIV, 657), MAUSOLLOS WAS
A SATRAP IN 377 B.C., BUT LATER HE BECAME THE
VIRTUAL RULER OF CARIA. HE REMOVED THE CARIAN
CAPITAL FROM MYLASA TO HALICARNASSUS AND INVITED
FAMOUS GREEK ARCHITECTS AND SCULPTORS TO EMBELLISH
HIS CAPITAL AND THE OTHER CARIAN CITIES WITH EXCELLENT
WORKS OF ART. THE MAUSOLEUM, NAMED AFTER MAUSOLLOS,
WAS THE MOST MONUMENTAL TOMB OF THE GREEK WORLD
AND WAS PRIZED AS ONE OF THE SEVEN WONDERS OF
THE ANCIENT WORLD.
